Friday, 13 September 2019 21:00

And we’re back! So the first thing I did in MyTeam this year (after opening my Dirk-centric Starter Pack) is unlock the auction house. Luckily it wasn’t as complex as it was last year, as you just have to collect 30 cards. But still, it’s kind of silly. Once that chore was complete, I looked […]

Gears 5 sales are bad – it is also the most successful launch in series history
Monday, 16 September 2019 20:05
It’s 2019, and the standards for a game’s success are rapidly shifting. Gears 5 sales - at least in the UK - have been just a fraction of its predecessors, yet Microsoft is saying that this is “biggest launch week of any Xbox Game Studios title this generation.” Microsoft has run a whole bunch of heavy promotion for Xbox Game Pass leading into the new title’s release, and it looks like the subscription era is truly upon us. Gears 5 brought in over three million players in the first weekend, which doubles the same figure for Gears of War 4, and marks Microsoft’s most successful first-party launch since Halo 4 on Xbox 360, according to the official announcement. The new game has also tripled its predecessor’s performance on PC, and marks Microsoft’s “best-ever debut on Steam” - though Gears 5’s Steam player counts probably just speak poorly to the company’s previous efforts on the platform. This is despite Gears 5’s poor performance in UK retail charts. As analyst Daniel Ahmad notes, Gears of War 4 sold 4.5 times better in its launch week, and Gears of War 3 - at the height of the Xbox 360’s success and before digital distribution was a major factor - sold 20 times better.

Final Fantasy XIV patch 5.1 reworks crafting and brings the first Nier alliance raid
Monday, 16 September 2019 21:02
Final Fantasy XIV players have had time to catch up on the Shadowbringers story, maybe level some new classes, and broadly enjoy all the new stuff from the latest expansion. The first major post-launch patch has been scheduled for a vague ‘October’ release date for some time, and Square Enix has provided a quick, English-language overview of what the developers showed for patch 5.1 at Tokyo Game Show last week. Officially titled Vows of Virtue, Deeds of Cruelty, the new update will naturally bring the first round of post-launch main story quests to follow up the events of Shadowbringers. There’ll be a new extreme difficulty trial, new beast tribe quests with the Pixies, and offer up the usual array of job adjustments and system updates. The big new content is the first part of the Neir: Automata-themed YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse raid series, built in collaboration with director Yoko Taro and producer Yosuka Saito. The first 24-player alliance raid is called The Copied Factory, and will land as part of the 5.1 update.

Undertale creator shares a development update on Deltarune, including new music
Monday, 16 September 2019 22:58
It’s been close to a year since the first part of Deltarune launched, and while it was a tantalising glimpse of what to expect in the wake of Undertale, we still don’t know much more about what the full game will look like. Over the weekend, creator Toby Fox shared a few details on Deltarune’s development in celebration of Undertale’s fourth birthday. “The design of the actual game and the specifics of what happen are going really well,” Fox says on Twitter (via USGamer). “I have a lot of confidence in the game that is currently written in my notes. At least, I think people that enjoy the things that I make, will enjoy it. That's all I'm ever aiming for.” It’s all a bit vague, but Fox adds “there are other aspects that are facing some hurdles, but they'll definitely get overcome. Trust me when I say that, although I want to take my time making an excellent game, I also want to get the game into peoples' hands as quickly as possible. Seriously.” That’s certainly not a release date, but it’s the closest we’re likely to get for a good while.

A man gets 15 months in prison and a two-year ban from gaming after instigating a deadly swatting
Tuesday, 17 September 2019 00:05
In December 2017, Casey Viner lost a $1.50 bet in Call of Duty. He asked Tyler Barriss to place a fake emergency call that would send police to the home of the other person involved in the dispute - but Viner was given a fake address, and as a result of the swatting prank, a man with no connection to Viner named Andrew Finch was shot and killed by police. Viner pleaded guilty to conspiracy and obstruction of justice in April of this year, and the US Department of Justice has confirmed that he will pay $2,500 in restitution, serve 15 months in prison, and following that term, he will serve two years on supervised release. Viner is “prohibited from engaging in any form of online gaming for two years” as part of the supervised release, according to court documents (via Polygon). Earlier this year, Barriss pleaded guilty to making the call, and was sentenced to twenty years in prison for his role in Finch’s death, as well as numerous other threats and false reports to police.

Borderlands 3 reveals that Claptrap can climb stairs after all
Tuesday, 17 September 2019 01:56
One of the most memorable gags in Borderlands 2 is when you and Claptrap head up to confront Handsome Jack. Your robot companion is talking up the big moment the whole way, until the moment the giant gate opens up to reveal… stairs. The one thing Claptrap’s singular wheel can’t overcome. Yet the little bot seems to have suddenly overcome his stair problem in time for Borderlands 3. The Borderlands community has been in (mostly facetious) meltdown since the discovery that Claptrap is now fully capable of rolling up stairs, as indicated by the images and videos captured on Reddit. You don’t have to wait long to see it, either - Claptrap will be inexplicably climbing stairs as soon as you get to Sanctuary. There’s some reference to stairs among the Borderlands 3 dead Claptraps. One includes a stair-climbing module that its owner forgot to turn on - or maybe our Claptrap stole the module sometime between the events of Borderlands 2 and 3.

Easy mode for Guild Wars 2 raids is possible, but it’d take time away from other content
Tuesday, 17 September 2019 09:00
Guild Wars 2 will soon see the start of a new Living World season with the Icebrood Saga. This big update will bring us strike missions, which developer ArenaNet has described as a sort of bridge for newer players to get into proper raiding. But some fans are just there for the story, and the stress of raiding is a bit too much - thus, they want a very easy ‘story’ mode to see the content those raids have to offer. “There’s a constant, constant tug,” game director Mike Zadorojny tells us. “Do we go build new raids for the raid group, or do we pull somebody to go make the old raids easier? The Bastion of the Penitent is one that we get a lot of comments on, because it’s the Saul D’Alessio story and the mursaat. It’s a very powerful, moving story, and it was very self-contained to that raid. So unless you’re a raider, you never see it.” Zadorojny says “I would not rule it out. The thing that we need to be careful about is how we manage that expectation. Because if we go back and release ‘story mode’ for an individual raid, that is taking time away from other things like being able to build additional raid content for the raiders. We want to make sure that we’re trying to service both groups.”
